Soccer Guessr privacy policy
Last updated 8 October 2026
Soccer Guessr (www.soccerguessr.com) is a free daily soccer guessing game: you study a photo from a real match and guess the teams, year, competition, managers, line-ups, score and scorers. This policy explains what information Soccer Guessr collects, how it is used and shared, how long it is kept, and the choices you have. It applies to the website and to signing in with an email address or with Google.
Information we collect
When you play as a guest. Your finished rounds (your score on each round and on each question) and any round you are part-way through are stored in your own browser using local storage. This information stays on your device and is not sent to our servers unless you later sign in.
When you create an account with an email address. We collect your email address and a password. We store only a one-way scrypt hash of your password, never the password itself.
When you sign in with Google. With your permission, Google shares your Google account ID, your email address and whether Google has verified it, and your name. We request only the openid, email and profile scopes. We do not request or receive your contacts, files, calendar, Gmail or any other Google data. We store your Google account ID and email address; we do not store your name or profile picture.
When you play while signed in. We store the score you earn on each round, the points for each question in that round, and when you finished it. When you sign in, rounds saved in your browser as a guest are copied to your account.
Technical information. When you sign in we set one cookie (sg_session) holding a random session token, and during Google sign-in a short-lived cookie that protects the sign-in from forgery. Our servers see your IP address when your browser connects, and our hosting provider keeps standard request logs. Your IP address is also used briefly in memory to limit repeated sign-in attempts. We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not build profiles of you.
How we use your information
- To create your account and sign you in, including recognising you when you return with the same Google account or email address.
- To save your scores to your account and show them to you on any device, including your archive of past rounds.
- To keep the service secure, for example by limiting repeated sign-in attempts and protecting sessions.
We do not use your information for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not use it to train machine learning or AI models.
Information we receive from Google
Soccer Guessr's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use the Google account information described above only to sign you in to Soccer Guessr and keep your account and scores. We do not transfer it to others except as needed to run the service (our hosting and database providers below), to comply with the law, or as part of a merger or sale with notice to you, and no person reads it except where you ask us for help, for security, or as required by law.
How we share information
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that run Soccer Guessr for us, who process it on our behalf:
- Heroku (Salesforce) hosts the website and server.
- Neon hosts the database that stores accounts and scores.
- Cloudflare provides our domain name and DNS.
- Google provides "Sign in with Google" if you choose to use it.
Match photos are loaded directly from Wikimedia Commons, which sees your IP address and browser information when your browser fetches them, as with any image on the web. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of our users or the service.
How long we keep information
We keep your account and scores for as long as your account exists. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete your email address, Google account ID, password hash, sessions and scores within 30 days. Sessions expire after 30 days, and expired sessions are deleted automatically. Guest data stays in your browser until you clear it.
How we protect information
All traffic to Soccer Guessr is encrypted with HTTPS, and the connection between our server and the database is encrypted. Passwords are stored only as salted scrypt hashes, session tokens are stored only as hashes, and the session cookie cannot be read by scripts on the page. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we work to protect your information.
Your choices and rights
- Play without an account. Signing in is optional; the whole game works as a guest.
- Access or delete your data. Email us at the address below and we will send you a copy of the information we hold about you, or delete your account and all of its scores.
- Remove Google access. You can disconnect Soccer Guessr from your Google account at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
- Clear guest data. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes your guest results.
Children
Soccer Guessr is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we collect or use information, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
